HMRC mileage allowance calculator
Self-employed and using your own vehicle for work? HMRC's simplified expenses let you claim a flat rate per business mile instead of working out fuel, insurance and repairs. Enter your miles to see your claim.
How the rates work
- Cars and vans: 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in 2026-27 (45p up to 2025-26), then 25p a mile after that.
- Motorcycles: 24p a mile, whatever the mileage.
- The 10,000-mile threshold counts business miles in the tax year, so a trip that crosses it is split between the two rates.
- If you use the £1,000 trading allowance, you can't claim expenses on top, mileage included.

Keep a proper mileage log
HMRC expects a record of each business journey. The UK Mileage & Allowable Expenses Log works out the tax year, keeps a running total, splits trips at 10,000 miles, adds the working-from-home flat rate and totals your other expenses. It's coming to the Tidy Sheets shop soon.
